My Journey
I went to Wake Forest University School of Law because I wanted to be a state prosecutor. I saw it on Law & Order, and it sounded nice when I said it out loud. And, as a first-generation Haitian American, I could not see the full picture of where an American legal education could actually lead me. So, I followed the path that was obvious: litigation.
In law school, I did everything litigation centered. I participated in litigation clinics and externships, joined the trial team, and wrote on the journal. Like many other law students, this led me to practice civil litigation at a law firm. When I stepped into a firm, however, I realized pretty quickly that preparing for a hearing or trial wasn’t where I came alive. The hearings, the motions, the billable hours — I respected it, but it didn’t align with me.
What fueled me was employment law. I enjoyed reading through all the company documents, untangling a complex workplace dispute, and assessing the risk at the center of it all. Today, I’m essentially a legal project manager. I manage employment litigation matters on the insurance side, for national and international clients. The work is strategic, risk-focused, and nothing like what I imagined in law school.
I built Legally Navigating because I stepped off the litigation path to try something new, and discovered a new non-traditional world. I’d like to share that with you. If you’re a law student who isn’t sure litigation is for you, or an attorney ready to pivot but don’t know where to start, this is for you.
My Mission
I created Legally Navigating as a resource for lawyers, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, who are curious about paths beyond the traditional law firm model. A legal education opens doors to countless possibilities, and I want to shine a light on them. Through stories, interviews, and practical insights, my mission is to inspire and equip you to explore those possibilities and confidently build a career that works for you.
